Summer Roof Maintenance Tips

Summer Roof Maintenance Tips

While it’s tempting to spend time enjoying the nice weather and your backyard, some of it should be spent planning summer roof maintenance.

Hot weather is here, which means that many people are spending more time outside on the weekend. While it’s tempting to spend all of that time enjoying the nice weather and your backyard, some of it should be spent planning summer roof maintenance. Preventative maintenance is critical to ensure that your roof lasts for as long as possible. Here are some of our best tips for your summer roof maintenance.

Why Summer Roof Maintenance Matters

The summer heat can do tremendous damage to your roof over the course of the season. The rays of the sun can fade your roofing material, which can cause it to look patchy or lose its color entirely. Additionally, the heat and increase in humidity can lead your roof to expand. This might cause leaks or cracks that need to be repaired. The ultraviolet rays from the sun may also do extra damage to asphalt roof shingles, as the coating can become damaged.

Check for Moss, Mold, or Algae

Summer in Maryland means plenty of rain and heat, which can be a bad combination if you are looking to prevent moss, algae, and mold. As part of your summer roof maintenance, regularly check your roof for any signs of mold or algae growth. If you do not take care of this growth in a timely fashion, your shingles may begin to curl or crack. Additionally, mold damage can occur that may enter the rest of your home.

Look for Tree Limbs

If you have trees that are near your roof or hanging over top of it, now is the time to take care of branch removal. Summer thunderstorms can break branches and cause them to fall, which might mean the branches fall through your roof! During your summer roof maintenance, check for any low-hanging tree branches or branches that are crossing over the top of your home.

Don’t Forget the Gutters

When summer storms occur, your gutters are also critical. Gutters that are in good condition will be able to quickly move water away from your home so that it does not pool around the foundation or start to enter the house. During your summer roof maintenance, make sure that your gutters are clean and in good repair.
