Invest in New Curtains
Thick curtains designed for the winter months will do a great job at trapping heat inside of your home and preventing traditional heat loss through the windows. If you purchase curtains with a quality thermal lining, you will save much more money than you spent. If you can’t afford to get new thermal curtains, you can always use shower curtains or even inexpensive fleece blankets to block out some of the cold.
Let the Sun In
It’s a good idea to leave the curtains open during the day to let some warmth in and close them once the sun goes down. The sun is a free and powerful source of warmth, so don’t be afraid to use it!
Look for Small Drafts
Drafts can come from anywhere in your home, whether it’s underneath your door, underneath your window, or even through your letter box or doggie door. You should make an effort to block off every possible draft area inside of your home. A small draft can have a huge impact on your entire home, so being picky and precise can be a great thing.
Clear Around Your Vents
Is your couch sitting right in front of one of your vents? You’re wasting heat every day! You should always avoid putting furniture or any objects in front of radiators or vents. You’ll be paying a premium to heat up furniture instead of heat up your home.
Cover Up Bare Spots
Wooden flooring is beautiful throughout the year, but it can be cold underfoot during the winter. To lock in heat on the floor, use throw rugs or carpeting to warm up the room. If you aren’t a big fan of how your floor looks covered up, remember that you can roll the rugs up the moment the thermometer starts to rise.
