Eventually, you will need to replace your roof. But before you do that, you might be able to simply remove the bad parts. Here are some tips on how to do that.

Do It Safely

First things first, do whatever you do to do as safely as possible. If you’re going to be up on your roof, you need to be safe. The nails and shingles falling off the roof can damage the exterior of your home, including the windows and doors. Be sure that no one is standing directly under a spot where loose shingles or stray tools can be blown off by a sudden gust of wind. Make sure you bring the shingles up with you when you get on the roof.

Be Aware of Danger

Keep an eye out for potentially unstable and dangerous places to stand on your roof. The shingles can soften or be slick from another rainstorm. You might trip and fall off the roof, which can injure you and damage the roof in the process. Try to walk on the roof supports but move as cautiously as you can. A support harness is going to be your best friend while you work on your roof.

Avoid the Flashing

Don’t damage the roof flashing. It may be necessary to come near them while working on your roof shingles but avoid damaging any materials that make up the flashing on your roof. Pull up any nails that get in your way, but you will need to move the flashing and set them aside for the time being. Avoid the temptation to reuse damaged roof flashing, as this will only cause more problems for you later on.
