Why Your New Home Needs a Sun Tunnel

The flexible tubing is better for spaces that have obstacles, like in attics, while the rigid tubing is better for long distances and conveys brighter light.

If you’re planning to custom build or remodel a home, you’re probably spending a lot of time daydreaming about all of the features you’d love to have. When you picture the finished rooms, how many of them are filled with warm, natural light? Most people want a way to allow natural light into their many living areas, but it’s not always possible based on the design of the house. Interior rooms won’t have windows, and often don’t have roof access that allows for a sunlight. A solution that you may not have considered (and more likely, may not even know exists) is the sun tunnel. Read on to learn all about this amazing design feature.

What Even Is A Sun Tunnel?

A sun tunnel is also sometimes called tubular skylights. They are a method for bringing sunlight into a home using metal tubing and mirrors so that it is reflected from the outside into interior spaces. The purpose of a sun tunnel is to bring natural sunlight in without any additional electricity, and the associated warmth and health benefits come with it. With a sun tunnel, you can brighten up a dark, interior room, naturally.

How Do They Work?

Sun tunnels connect to the outside of the home and then extend into which ever rooms you want the light, using mirrors to bounce the sunlight along the metal tube. At the end of the tunnel is a diffuser that filters the light into the room. These come in a variety of styles to match the design and aesthetic of your room. If you desperately want a skylight in a room without roof access, a sun tunnel can achieve the same effect.

How Are They Made?

Sun tunnels can be made from either rigid or flexible tubing. The flexible tubing is better for spaces that have obstacles, like in attics, while the rigid tubing is better for long distances and conveys brighter light. At the top of the tube, there is a dome, similar to a skylight that is attached with flashing over a hole in the roof. From there, the tunnel snakes through the house till it reaches the desired room, and the diffuser is installed in the room. The time it takes to install is surprisingly minimal, and the results are a beautiful, lit room with a lower environmental impact.
